THE BEST DIRT OUT OF EICMA 2019

EICMA is the hallowed ground for all things two wheels. Brands bring their very best wares to put on display for the masses that attend from all over the world. It is also a place where new models are unveiled and prototypes revealed, hinting at things to come. The focus this year seemed to be on Adventure bikes and a lot of street, with barely a LOOK-IN for the off-road world. We have compiled the best dirt to come out of EICMA 2019.

FANTIC EX125

Fantic are back into the off-road game with a colaboration with another brand. Can you guess who that is? The frame is the dead giveaway here, as well as the swingarm with the plug hole in it. Yamaha have supplied the chassis and what seems to be the majority of the engine, but with some minor Fantic upgrades and an obvious change in visual design and plastics. Basically looks like a YZ125 but actually much cooler. Yamaha reliability with Fantic flair - I’ll take two please!

KTM 390 ADVENTURE

For the full scoop on the 390 Adventure from KTM, type ‘390’ in the search bar. Jmping into the small ADV market alongside BMW, this incarnation is sure to get the blood running in any Orange fan club. Perfect for the beginner, smaller rider or lady without guns, this could be a popular bike on NZ soil.

SUZUKI V-STROM 1050

This is not exactly the DR BIG of old, which you can read all about by typing 'DR BIg' in the search bar. Though the release of the Suzuki V-STROM 1050 comes at a time when Suzuki needed to tickle up their large capacity Adventure bike. To say we really love that bright yellow colour-way would be an understatement. And the increase in displacement is a nice touch too.

This historical bike at EICMA is Gaston Rahier’s Dakar bike from the very early years when Dakar was getting its feet.

SEGWAY DIRT/MOUNTAIN BIKE

Something you might not have expected would be a bike from Segway. The battery powered machine looks half MTB half moto and probably quite light because of that. With two versions (X160 & X260), you can scoot to work, down the local MTB park and your favourite Moto track. How it actually goes would be very up for debate.

HUSQVARNA NORDIN 901

Like we said, Adventure was big at EICMA and out of the Husqvarna camp we saw the Nordin 901. This is said to be a concept bike at the moment, but like when the Tenere 700 was shown at EICMA a few years ago as a prototype, and scored much attention, the Nordin is getting that same reception. I would expect this to be on dealer floors in the coming years. And it looks bloody brilliant.

HAMISH MACDONALDS WORLD CHAMP WINNING SHERCO 125

Even though the Christchurch lad was busy chasing sheep during EICMA, his championship winning machine was on display for all to see - still dirty. Good to see a bit of Kiwi at the Italian show.

ASTON MARTIN AMB 001

And to finish off - not at all a dirt bike but just plain stupid. The first motorcycle from Aston Martin is literally out of this world. Will the concept become reality? Do we really care though? So many questions.
