5 THINGS: ALPINESTARS RACER COMPASS GEAR
We have been using the 2021 Alpinestars Racer Compass gear for just on a month now and we have compiled the top 5 things we love about this gear set.
Number 5
I love me some block colours. I remember a while ago it seemed like the busier the pattern the ‘cooler’ it was. Thankfully nowadays the industry has gone back to a simpler design which I like much more. I also appreciate the splash of pink in the gear, which you very rarely see on a guys gear set. And although the white can prove hard to clean, it looks pretty cool in my opinion. Just a not from me though - DO NOT lean on the tailpipe of a two-stroke on your first ride. IT WILL stain your fresh white pants without hesitation. Talk about gutted!
Number 4
Now to the actual usability of the 2021 Racer Compas Gear. The highly-resistant 600D poly-fabric main chassis of the pant construction is PU coated for strength with a technical yearn for durability while the jersey is a poly-fabric construction that is lightweight, moisture-wicking and durable. In short this means they are super light and super strong. Honestly, the pants wouldn’t weigh much more than the jersey and that is a pretty good combo. Durability and lightness.
Number 3
Room. Simple word but so important in today's knee brace wearing world. While the gear is getting slimmer, more streamlined, and functional, some companies and model lines have lost their way when it comes to having plenty of room in the knee area. I wear POD knee braces and I like to have zero issues when pulling on my pants, and while moving around on the bike. The Racer Compass gear gives me plenty of room in the knee area for my braces and just enough stretch fabric behind the knee and on the knee cap that these are possibly the most comfortable pants I wear. It’s kind of like a sports fit but without the bulge out the front if you know what I mean.
The Jersey size I run usually run is Large but was led towards the XL as the jerseys are a slimmer fit. I ran my armour under and again plenty of room without being baggy - which I don’t like.
Number 2
The Radar GLoves have extra thumb padding, while also being a single layer glove. They have pull-on tabs to help with propper fitment and some extra rubber patches on the palm which you actually notice improve your connection to the grips. I’m not normally a single layer glove guy as I experience blisters from clapping. But I could live with these gloves happily and they are very light too.
Number 1
Little extras. I found a tiny internal hip pocket that would be perfect for your car key or some cash if you happen to be going bush. That tells me that the Racer Compass is spec’d more towards the off-road rider. But I see many MX riders choosing this gear based on it being lightweight and durable.
The whole of the jersey construction is stretchy. So in case I get fat I will still be wearing this gear pretty easily. And I can let the more festively plump friends of mine borrow the gear. It is also showing no signs of pilling after numerous excursions through dense bush.
The knees are padded, pre-curved and fit like your favourite pair of jeans. But if I had to pick my ‘Top-Thing’ about this gear it would be how nice the pants fit around my knee braces. Effortless.
